Body mass index calculator.

Before beginning any weight loss program, it is important to determine one's body fat level. This is the best way of ascertaining whether a problem exists, the severity of the any problem and the type of action required.

The best (and most accurate) way of determining one's level of body fat is to consult a GP or physician. A medical professional with knowledge of the individual's medical history and personal circumstances is in the best position to recommend what action, if any, is required.

The body mass index (BMI) is a simple and reasonably effective way of measuring body fat. The BMI is calculated based on the height and weight and usually gives a score of between 20 and 25. A score in this bracket indicates a normal, healthy weight and level of body fat. A score of less than 20 suggests that the individual is underweight, and more than 25 overweight. Where the score is above 30, this suggests that the individual is obese with a high level of body fat.

The formula used to calculate BMI is [height] / [weight]. These measurements can be inputted in either imperial or metric terms, but must both be in the same form to ensure an accurate score.
